Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

Resource, respect, protection and education.

The rivers we offer float trips on traverse just a portion of the 4.7 million acre Togiak National Wildlife Refuge.

We encourage our guests to respect the refuge's natural heritage, resources and the people who reside there, and we design our trips to do just that.

We strive to provide our guests with back-country adventures that are minimal impact, educational and most of all, enjoyable.

History

Our approach is simple and we have over three decades of Alaska float fishing experience to fish and float the most prolific of Alaska's waters.

With knowledgeable guides and custom rafts expressly set up for an Alaska float trip, we're also equipped with the most comfortable camps – our tents are built right here in Alaska and can more than handle Alaska's ever-changing weather!

We provide you with the highest quality Alaska float fishing trip experience available, bar none, at the most productive times, with your safety and comfort in mind and, of course, with the aim to catch fish!

Your Manager, Paul Hansen

Paul is an avid nature lover who found his passion for fishing in Hawaii.

He dreamed of visiting Alaska and in the late 70s, he got the opportunity to live his dream when he was stationed in Anchorage.

He honed his skills by guiding for fly-out lodges NW of Anchorage in the 80s and eventually started his own guide service, Alaska Rainbow Adventures, in 1993.

Today, he is a renowned guide and an expert in his field.

The Setting

The Kanektok and Goodnews Rivers in Southwest Alaska are both prime locations for fishing enthusiasts seeking a wilderness adventure.

Both flow through the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge and offer a chance to encounter Alaska's big game and bird species in their natural habitat.

These waters are remote and unspoiled treasures in southwestern Alaska, meandering through untouched landscapes with pristine waterways and wilderness surroundings.

Your float trip with us begins at the headwaters lake of the Kanektok or Goodnews River, (depending on which trip you have chosen) and meanders westward through the foothills of the Akhlun Mountains.

The upper section provides breathtaking views and is home to innumerable Dolly Varden and Grayling. The middle section is more braided, making it ideal for Rainbow fishing. The rivers then flow into the tundra-filled lowlands in their lower sections.

Float trips on both rivers offer excellent camping, stunning scenery and incredible fishing opportunities. While the Kanektok River is one of the longer rivers we visit here at Alaska Rainbow Adventures, it is a rafter's paradise – one can spend the entire day catching fish without leaving the raft!

However, structures on and off the main channel can still be explored to search for that trophy fish whenever possible. The Goodnews, being shorter, allows for additional wading opportunities and a slower pace.

The Fishing

The incredible biomass in these river systems explains why the Kanektok and Goodnews Rivers are home to some of the best fly fishing in the world and are often referred to as 'fish factories' due to the insane number of fish and different species available.

The float trip fishing season starts in early July with the King and Sockeye salmon run, and ends in mid-September when the Rainbow fishing reaches its peak and the Silver Salmon run comes to a close.

Embark with us on an unforgettable adventure down either the Kanektok or Goodnews Rivers where you'll have the opportunity to camp in peaceful seclusion each night on expertly-chosen gravel bars, surrounded by unparalleled fishing opportunities.

Our Alaska Float Trip Program promises world-class Alaskan fishing with top-notch camping accommodations and exceptional food.

Our spacious tents are equipped with chairs and cozy cots, making them the perfect refuge in inclement weather for up to two anglers and their gear.

Additionally, we offer a custom-built dining tent and screened area to accommodate the entire group for dining or as a gathering space.

Our Alaskan-made tents are built to withstand even the harshest conditions, ensuring safety, comfort and a remarkable fishing experience.

With over 30 years of experience, our commitment to providing the best amenities is unwavering.

"The food was outstanding-steaks, shrimp and crab, eggs, bacon and French toast just to name a few" ~ Wade Gastin

"Fresh salmon cooked on the grill at the side of the river can't be beat! The food was outstanding!" ~ Greg Sharp

"The food was excellent; it was just first class all the way." ~ Harrison Paul Anderson

"The cuisine never ceased to amaze me, filet minion to shrimp scampi. A month before the trip I'd left Paul a message regarding menu items I'd like. I was pleased these items were easily incorporated into his planning." ~ Rob Gillette

"The food is excellent, as well. I'll put your float operation up against any in Alaska, Great Job!! ~ Justin Tackett

Your Chef, Your Guides are your chefs

The preparation of meals during a wilderness trip is typically done by the trip lead or head guide, although other guides may also contribute by bringing in their unique specialties.

While we welcome suggestions, we may not always be able to accommodate them due to the logistical challenges of traveling in remote areas of Alaska and limited availability of ingredients.

Booking Policy

Deposits and cancellations: A deposit of 50% of the trip cost is required to confirm a booking. Once confirmed by receipt of the initial payment/deposit, you are responsible for the entire total balance, even if you do not participate in the trip for any reason due to the short booking season and loss of revenue this represents. Deposits are due within 15 days of requesting space on any trip. Please note, however, that all spaces remain available for sale during this time.

Payments: Payments can be by check/Paypal transfer (credit card payments can be sent via Paypal plus a 3.5% convenience fee) or wire transfer. Please note that all payments are non-refundable. Payment of the balance in full is due no later than 60 days before the start date of your adventure or June 1st, whichever comes first. Deposits and final payments are non-refundable and non-transferrable. We can not emphasize the purchase of trip insurance strongly enough. Receipt of deposit by Alaska Rainbow Adventures means you agree to these terms and conditions.

All reservations made within 60 days of departure require payment to be paid in full at the time of booking. 'Special offers' are also to be paid in full when booking. If payment has not been remitted in full before the trip start, participation in the trip will not be allowed and money received will not be refunded. Rates and terms are subject to change without notice.

Responsibility: Alaska Rainbow Adventures is not responsible for any loss, damage, or injury to persons or property, however, caused, or for any costs of accommodations and associated services caused by weather, transportation problems and other events beyond Alaska Rainbow Adventures' control. If Alaska Rainbow Adventures cancels for reasons within our control, we will reschedule you for the next available date that works for you. There will be no refunds for canceled trips for any reason.

When necessary for the safety or comfort of our guests, Alaska Rainbow Adventures has the right to cancel or make reasonable schedule changes to all or a portion of your trip or services without recourse. This can be due to weather and/or other events out of our control.

It is your responsibility to ascertain that you are fit enough to participate in this type of activity and in doing so, accept all risks and costs involved should it be deemed you cannot at any time before or during your trip with Alaska Rainbow Adventures.

Liability Waiver: Due to insurance requirements, each angler wishing to participate in any trip arranged by Alaska Rainbow Adventures must read and sign an 'acknowledgment of risks' form and a copy of these terms and conditions. You accept and are bound by these terms and conditions even if you do not return the form.

Extras

Tax

Overnight accommodations and meals at the starting or ending point of your trip, fishing license* tackle ~ this includes rods/reels*, flies, leader materials etc, gratuities or items of a personal nature, your sleeping bag*, alcoholic beverages, park fees, taxes, travel/extraction insurance.

Other

Note: We are not a fixed operation such as a lodge, and we operate in several different locations around the Bristol Bay and Southwest region of Alaska away from usual supply sources. Because of this, we do not always have on hand many of the items that one might find available, included or as extras at a fixed operation, such as fishing licenses, waders, sleeping bags (available in Bethel for rent w/liners), tackle/lures, or for your guides to have on hand a substantial selection of extra available flies and lures, it is, for this reason, we ask that you supply those items. You are responsible for purchasing your Alaska fishing license before your trip and having it on your person at all times while fishing. If you do not have it, you cannot fish on the trip, and we do not sell fishing licenses. Visit the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Website to purchase. If you are on a trip where fishing for king salmon is open and you plan on targeting king salmon, you will also need to purchase a king stamp.
